A Testimonial

by Dr Trish Cooper, PhD in Linguistics

"A refreshingly concise guide on how to teach English online. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the theory underlying the principles of language teaching, with each discussion point clearly illustrated by relevant and practical examples of
what to do in the classroom.

The video clips selected to illustrate various points present additional insight, while making
each point highly memorable through the use of visual aids and humour.

This course is deceptively fun and easy to read given the amount of detailed information
presented. For example, this course not only focuses on online teaching or on young
learners, but provides guidelines on the distinctions between online and onsite classrooms,
as well as the difference between teaching adults and children, while also considering how
to approach children of different age groups. The use of reflective tasks is designed to get
you thinking about issues before they are discussed in depth, while the quizzes are carefully
constructed to test your understanding on the completion of each module.

The most attractive feature of this course, however, is the opportunity each student is given
for ‘real’ feedback on their teaching practice sessions. The chance to be observed and have
an experienced teacher provide constructive feedback on your teaching is highly unusual
within an online course, and so an extremely valuable component of this course.

This course will give you the tools you need to approach the online classroom with
confidence, whether you’ve enrolled for this course because you’re more familiar with ‘brick-
and-mortar’ classrooms, are unsure as to how to manage young children within an English
class, or are completely new to language teaching."

I started my career in EFL in 2008 when I completed a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) course at Wits Language School. Previous to this I had brought up my children while completing a degree in linguistics and psychology. I taught English as a first language to children aged 9 - 13 for a few years and then did the TESOL course to enable me to teach English as a foreign language. On completing the course I got a job with a large language school called ILA, and I was based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I worked there for just over a year and, on returning to South Africa, I started teaching EFL at Wits Language School. I spent nine years at WLS, moving from teaching into training and mentoring teachers. In 2018 my husband and I left Johannesburg and moved to a smaller town. I then changed my teaching career from a brick-and-mortar environment to an online environment. It certainly was different, but I love the flexibility and the ability to work at home. Taking all the theory and teaching knowledge I have acquired over the years, plus the changing world where more and more teaching is done online, I decided it was time to share what I have learnt in an online course. Teaching isn't a job, it's a passion. I 'fell' into teaching and I'm so glad I did!

At 42, after becoming a grandmother, I did a TEFL course and I immediately started researching places to teach. Within six months, I was teaching In Mexico. I was fortunate enough to live with a South African couple who were both teaching at a local school and were kind enough to find me a job immediately. I was employed to teach English, Geography and History at the middle school. I spent six months living in this small town but then decided to explore bigger playing fields, ie. Mexico City. I connected with an agent who had business clients at different companies in the city who wanted to improve their business English. These clients were sprawled all over this massive city and I travelled and taught at their place of work. What an incredible experience! En route back to South Africa, I stopped in Luxembourg for a short stint, where I taught English to European lawyers at the EU parliament in Luxembourg. When I arrived back in South Africa I got a job at Wits Language School, where I worked for just a few months short of 15 years. I taught all levels in EFL, from beginner through to advanced, to adult students from around the world. I now teach children and adults online and love it. I work from home and I am my own boss. I set my own working hours every day and love the freedom!
